The internal drawcord lets you partially close the opening and secure the contents against falling out while running or crawling. Compared to the previous generation, Gen 2 adds MOLLE webbing and a tapered bottom to improve pouch stability. When you do not need it, you can roll it up and secure it with hook and loop to reduce your gear profile. The external MOLLE webbing is intended for adding extra pouches. The pouch is suitable for real steel STANAG magazines as well as modern PMAGs and holds roughly 6 magazines. Of course, it also fits airsoft magazines, and with good arrangement you can fit up to 8 pieces or a smaller box magazine for LMGs (M249 100 rds).
