Protect your eyes first

A BB at 1 J will blind an unprotected eye, which is why no site lets you play without rated eye protection. Start here: goggles and glasses certified to EN 166 or ANSI Z87.1 are the minimum, and goggles with a foam seal are mandatory at many fields and for players under 18. Then decide how much of your face to cover. A mask, whether a full-face unit with built-in lens or a mesh lower-face guard worn with goggles, saves your teeth and makes close-range hits painless. A helmet protects your head from BBs, branches and door frames and gives you rails for a torch, camera and night-vision mount, and knee and elbow pads let you drop into cover without thinking twice.

Certifications explained

EN 166 is the European standard for eye protectors; look for the impact grade (F, B or A) in the product details. ANSI Z87.1 is the American equivalent and widely accepted at European sites. Ballistic-rated glasses and goggles tested to MIL or STANAG specifications go beyond either standard and are common in premium ranges. The certification filter on each sub-category shows only tested products. Mesh is impact-proof but not sealed; most sites accept it for the lower face, few accept mesh goggles.

Fog, fit and helmets

Fogging is the main reason players lift their goggles, which is the main cause of eye injuries. Dual-pane lenses, anti-fog coatings and small fans solve it, and a mask that vents your breath downward helps. Protection is unrestricted and the first thing to buy for a new player of any age.
